[ Oct 2021: 24 Hour Film ]
Remember how we made a film in 2 weeks in October? I had the incredible idea of inviting some of the burnt out artists from that film (including myself) onto a 24-hour film contest the very next week. Yay!
It was Clare & Carolan Korten, Lauren Lee, Makayla Inyavong and myself!! Wahoooo!!
Story & Boards
The prompt went something like: "how has the pandemic changed your life?"
We brainstormed and thumbnailed a very simple storyboard on a single large canvas.
We wanted to send a message about how being locked up at home helped us discover new dimensions of ourselves through all the hobbies we picked up.
However, since people were returning to work/school in person, we had to go back to being "squares" that fit in.
The film calls the viewer to change the world and "break the frame" instead of just fitting right back in.
Rough Animation
Then we divided the boards up, fleshed it out, and animated it. Here's my part!
Full Film!
Annnnnd here's the final product... 24 Hours.
Lauren's comic
Lauren made this fun little comic that captured the vibes perfectly. I HAD to share it.
Also, check out her comics on instagram @slowinternet.
We WON.... nothing!!!
Matter of fact, we weren't EVEN RANKED. And they rank about 200 of the films.
We were so shocked, both Lauren and I reached out to Aubry (the organiser) to ask if they missed our film somehow. We got no response :)
It's pretty funny that we thought we absolutely COOKED and then we found out that the judges hated it.
After the reality check (and some sleep) I realized that our story was presented in an unclear and generic way and didn't appeal to any audience emotion.
Lesson: Even if the animation and backgrounds are pretty, story is still king. GG. Go Next.
