IGNITING CHANGE

character design // animation

[ Oct 2020: Humble beginnings ]

The first animated short film team I worked on! It was the second semester of freshman year and I was desperate to get some experience making animated films.

When my senior, Meiya Lim, posted on instagram that she was looking for help on her 1-week film, I immediately roped my friends into joining me (despite our insane course loads).

Designing the protagonist, Vela

Lauren Lee and I bounced character design ideas off the director until something stuck.

The final design (created by yours truly), was a combination of the director's favorite design ideations from Lauren and myself.

Since Lauren didn't understand how the hair worked, I also created a special breakdown sheet to help the artists stay on model.

...no, I do not remember why I labeled it "Tips for TOES."

Animating 2 shots

While it doesn't look like a lot, I learned what it REALLY meant to animate a 10-second shot with 7 different characters.

Spoiler alert: It's a LOT of suffering for someone who barely knows how to animate.

It's cool that that shot basically became the poster child for the short film.

And animating the steering wheel was pretty easy.

You can watch the full short film here!
