CORALINE'S ROOM

character modeling // lighting // compositing

[ Dec 2020: Dream project, dream team ]

This was the final project for my FIRST 3D modeling class. I pitched the idea of recreating Coraline's other room for our final project because Coraline is my favorite film.

Each team member then picked one thing to 3D Model in the room. I chose Coraline's doll. (Surprise! It was extremely ambitious, considering the project's timeline and my experience with organic modeling but YOLO.)

Modeling the Coraline doll

The first step was to find great reference to model over. After lots of searching, I found a perfect turnaround on an auction website that sold the original doll used in the film.

The doll was then modeled in Maya and painted in Substance Painter.

UV unwrapping the doll hair was an absolute nightmare. My old Macbook crashed every time I double-clicked the edges of each strand of its hair. I was crying and unwrapping my own hair the whole time but I managed to get it done.

Story time!

The team was on discord at 1AM helping me import the Substance painter files into Maya correctly.

Yes, the project was due that morning.

I accidentally turned on my camera and I'll let my teammate, Cherise, tell the rest of this story...

Shelby the Curtain Wrangler, went on to switch from the vis-dev track to the 3D modeling track.

The final result!

I'm SO proud of the final result to this day. The tears I put into modeling the doll was worth it and every member of the team really pulled their weight.

Our team really had to come together to make it happen. Despite how ambitious and challenging it was, we overcame adversity through the power of friendship. I've been chasing that high ever since.

...a fun little thing

Cherise finished super early and decided to take a break from playing Hades to create a quick cute little animation combining the chest that she modeled and my Coraline doll.
